Sustainability in our Homes and Work Place
Over the last 30 plus years we have had the opportunity to educate ourselves in many areas of sustainability.
As advocates and promoters of a safe collection of Australian Eco products, we can talk for hours on the benefits of using a range of cleaning, laundry, kitchen and personal care products with none of the usual soaps, petrochemicals and caustic ingredients that affect our environment in different ways.
Soaps and petrochemicals flushed into our waterways create, algae, toxic waterways and deformities in marine life.
The other closer to home issue is the problems these toxic products have on our family’s health and wellbeing and those of our employees and work colleagues.
We rely entirely on our planet and it relies on the biodiversity unfortunately the biodiversity of our planet is failing
In David Attenborough’s documentary “A Life on our Planet”, he gives us some astounding figures:
In 1937 there were 2.3 billion people on earth. The carbon in our atmosphere was 280 parts per million and the remaining wilderness was 66%
In 2020 there was 7.8 billion people on earth. The carbon in our atmosphere was 415 parts per million and only 35% of our wilderness was remaining
It is expected unless we do something by 2030 there will be large parts of our world that are uninhabitable
ANSWER: we have to restore our world’s biodiversity.
We don’t want to finish this blog and have you feeling like you want to jump off the nearest bridge, so here are some of our recommendations for you as business owners and people of this planet:
Cut down the amount of meat you eat - veggies can be grown in much smaller areas
Reduce your power usage- turn off the lights you don’t need. Turn off the switches at the PowerPoints – this has a won-win benefit as you will save money on your utility bills
Create a waste free environment. How you ask?
Reduce: Fix what you presently have rather than buying something new. We all consume much more than we need and the energy needed for all these new gadgets and gizmos is a large part of our problem. We recommend companies starting out and established have a chat with Meryl Sukamar founder of Subcinctus*. Meryl works with companies to create a circular economy focusing on sustainable actions and reducing consumption.
REUSE: Go through your house and office and reuse what’s already in your draws, cupboards etc Tanya Lewis*, Eco organiser extraordinaire, challenges us all to rethink the true cost of our waste and finding ways to reuse what we have.
RECYCLE: If you really can’t use the items find a new home for them: Planet Ark*; Tanya Lewis and the Red Cycle are just a few of the organisations that can assist you with where to take your hard to recycle items.
Just start now!
Decluttering is an opportunity for us to give back to our communities and create more space in our environment and our minds.
“Alone we can do so little; together we can do so much.” Helen Keller.
As a T.E.A.M: (Together Everyone Achieves More) coming together and using each other’s strengths and making clear goals we all agree on, our work place can be a fun, energising, sustainable place where we are making a difference on all levels
And all it takes is to start today, taking small steps every day. Find a mentor to support you through the process and remember to take time to BE!
“In today’s rush,
We think too much,
Seek too much
Want too much
And forget about the
Joy of just being”
Eckhart Tolle
May your day be full of love and light
